What makes a good citizen?
The average or traditional view of what makes a good citizen often surrounds the notion that a good citizen contributes to society. This might include the idea of a person voting, volunteering, donating, helping others, paying taxes, working, and more. What makes a good citizen is a balance of some of these things, but also the influence of a person's own experiences and beliefs. People from different places will hold different views and have different experiences. These will influence what one believes a good citizen is, and will influence how they as an individual acts as a citizen.

Within our modern world, there is an emphasis on digital citizenship. Many people today have access to the internet, and even more have access at all times. Many people have some sort of device which allows them to be connect to the internet and other sources all the time. It is imperative that citizens understand how to use these tools to their potential.

A digital citizen is someone who is able to take the components of being a good citizen, and apply them to a digital setting. This means that a person is connected into the digital world and properly uses the tools to become an active member in society in a number of ways.
As teachers we need to incorporate citizenship into the classroom. As Jenny Buccos suggests, citizenship is a "21st century skill" which needs to start in the classroom. One we have achieved this, we can lead our students to be good digital citizens as well.

As Ribble, Bailey and Ross (2004) suggest, "Digital citizenship can be defined as the norms of behavior with regard to technology use" (p. 7). Within their article, they explore a number of key areas which they suggest create a good digital citizen, Their areas include: Etiquette, Communication, Education, Access, Commerce, Responsibility, Rights, Safety and Security, These areas explore the positive outcomes of being a digital citizen, but also the issues, such as cyber-bullying, that arise.
Through this website, my own interpretations of what makes a good digital citizen will be explored. It is important to keep the areas as presented by Ribble et al., in mind as their interpretations may differ but are as equally valid. Their article explores the inappropriateness in each area, as well as strategies to implement, Overall their article is very beneficial.
